Twin New Years, Tamil & Malayalam, celebrations begin…

Tamil Nadu and Kerala are set to celebrate the advent of vernacular New Year in the next two days, Tamil New Year and Vishu on 14th and 15th April at Prasanthi Nilayam. Commencing a three-day festivity this evening, noted Carnatic vocalist Sri Kavalam Srikumar presented a soulful musical offering at Bhagawan’s Divine Lotus Feet here in Prasanthi Nilayam. Son of legendary dramatist and theatre personality Padmabhushan Kavalam Narayana Panicker, Srikumar is a multi-talented vocalist, a well known name in Kerala musical circuit, known for his in-depth unique style of rendering, especially classical devotional.

This evening, Srikumar began with a Ganesh Vandana “Gajananam Bhutaganaadhi Sevidham…”, soon drifting into some of his popular numbers in vernacular, …Anatharey Sai Sanatharakkum…, Aaromaley SaiNatha… Ninakkarathi, Hridayam Kondaarathi, Naryanam Bhaje Narayanam Bhaje…which are rich with devotional lyrics, doubly enriched with unique voice modulation cum expression. Purandara Dasa’s Jagadodharana came next, followed by a vernacular composition “Maname Bhajamaname…”, “Om Namah Shivaya…”, a Mira Bhajan “Manare…”, “Krishna Nee Begane Baro…”, ending with an reverberating ‘infectious’ “Om Namah Shivaya…Om Namah Shivaya…” bhajan, joined by the capacity audience.

Sri Kavalam was accompanied by Sarvasree CG Sai Prakash and Girish Sahai on Harmonium and Tabla respectively.

Srikumar used to be a regular face during Onam and Vishu celebrations in the late nineties and early two thousands. Srikumar would often sing from his heart ‘For Bhagawan’, as Swami would often sit in rapt attention, at times picking the singer with special ‘Divine’ requests. The versatile artiste reproduced those classical ‘nostalgic’ evening yet again this evening here in His ‘immediate’ omnipresence.

Bhajans continued and ended with Mangala Arathi at 1905 hrs.

Earlier, the session commenced with a felicitation function for the top ranking students at SSSIHL, winning premier national examinations namely GATE, NET, JEST, etc. Twenty meritorious students were felicitated in the function, by Sarvasree Chakravarthi, RJ Ratnakar, Trustees at SSSCT and Vice Chancellor Prof KBR Varma.
